probably that your $servername variable in config.php is misnamed.

I am on a virtual sever so what do I have to tell the host to do

you need your host to set up the database for you (unless they give you that option in your hosting control panel) and you need the info from them that is requested in the config.php file.

the servername, database name, db username and password

leave the dbtype as mysql since it's the only one supported at the present time.

Did you change your control panel password at all since signing up with your host?

If so, try putting in your old passwords one by one in the config.php file to see if it works. I had this problem and it worked for me, even though I have one control panel password and one db password.
