    Placing Whole Forum Within Layout

Is there some special way to place the main forum content within another table? IE how the vB.org forum index has the border.

    Thanks.

I wanted a sidebar embedded in the actual layout so I editid the template FORUMHOME and placed the content between the 'main' tags (in the template this is the <!-- main --> and <!-- /main --> within a cell split down the verticle of the page-

You can use the header and footer but everything will be in the table.

            @trackpads:

Could you possibly explain in some more detail or even post the new FORUMHOME tamplate code and highlight what you've added? It seems that quite a lot users do want a sidebar and are missing detailed explanation. Like me... :-)

            Regards
            Ralf

Sure, I can post the code, let me clean it up a bit. I am not good at writing a tutorial but you can easily copy what I have done.

              Give me a few ;-)

Thanks for your FAST reply! This is amazing!

All I would need to get started is some general advise:

                - Which *files* to touch...
                - Which *templates* to touch or add...
                - Where to put things...

I can build the sidebar content myself, the only advise I would require is, where to put stuff. Is there any vBulletin Tutorial place out there, yet? I know vbulletin.org and vbulletintemplates.com but they are focussed on posting hacks and templates, not on *explaining*.... :-)

                Thanks again,
                Ralf

Do you want the avatar on the forum where I have it? I am almost done, I am trying to comment the html as much as possible so you can follow it.

The avatar would be fine. If you could indicate where it is inserted and how I could possibly "turn it off".

Its actually a conditonal and you need to place in some php code aswell. I got it from Vbulletintemplates, I will give it to you and if you want to edit it out you can. You will also need to replace the images in my template with yours so you can have your own "Please register" avatar.

Are you going to post it here, or do you want to email me?

Ok, here we go. Now I recommend you BACKUP your current templates that I am going to tell you to replace. I am pretty new myself to VB and cannot make any warranties here ;-) I backed them up by going in to the edit mode and then copying them out to TXT files in notepad. Then I save them as the same name as their template, just my method.

Here are the templates that you are going to edit-
                          1. phpinclude_start
                          2. navbar
                          3. FORUMHOME
                          1. phpinclude_start

                          (See Attachment: phpinclude_start.txt)

Add the code in the phpinclude_start.txt to the end of your phpinclude_start Template. This is from the Welcome Panel Avatar Mod from Vbulletintemplates.

                          2. navbar

                          (See Attachment: navbar_mine.txt)

Replace the entire file with the code in the navbar_mine.txt file, if you do not want to change this then dont edit this at all. This simply removes the login box, private messages info etc because I moved it into the sidebar. It will also ad the "Recent Topics" nabar for registered users, mainly because I can remember which code to edit to take it out

Make sure that you replace the little logo image in this text with something on your server.

                          3. FORUMHOME

                          (See Attachment: forumhome_recommended.txt)
                          (See Attachment: forumhome_mine.txt)

Ok, now this is the big one. I have included as an attachment the entire text of mine and the code of a recommended one that you can start with. The recommended code is to modify the stock FORUHOME that comes with VB3. You'll notice that in mine has a custom footer because I only wanted certain links on the homepage and not everywhere else. I spent about 2 hours this morning cleaning it up and commenting all the sidebar boxes to help you out. Just make sure you follow the tags and replace the images with ones on your server.

Ok, hopefully this will get you started. My ability to support all of this is limited but I will try. I hope it helps you!

Well, I forgot about this and tried to do it again today, but was not sucessful.

What I tried to do was make a table with three rows and three columns with images on the outer rows. However, this did not place a border all the way around the forum. Does anyone have an example of what code would go in the header and footer? Thanks.
