Character set (?) problem

My installation is having an issue when an international (to the United States) user posts using a character that is not part of the US standard set of characters. When that happens, the post breaks and all text that follows the character is cut off. The first part of the post shows up, but everything following does not appear.

An example is the British pound sign, others are letters with an accent mark like are common in Spanish languages.

I thought for some time it might be a template problem (if that's even possible) but I just upgraded to 3.7.0 and reverted all templates to default. Still, the problem persists.

Does anyone have an idea what could be the issue?
Is it possible to import additional character sets to vB to resolve the problem?
Another solution?

My current installed language is English (US) - should that, or can that, be changed?

Thanks, Jake. That was a great post and I tried everything listed there. I really thought that would do it! However, nope, still no luck.

Maybe I'm approaching this from the wrong direction. To be honest, I'm still learning about these charsets and languages and don't fully understand the ins and outs yet.

I've been working under the assumption vB would natively display characters like the British pound sign and that my installation is broken. Is that correct or is vB working and it normally does? Does vB do that without alteration? Should, for example, the pound sign be displaying without my needing to make changes?

If not, I have a couple more questions.

Is it easy to set up a single character translation to make the pound sign work?

And (sorry for the noob question) how would I go about doing that?

Unfortunately I don't know of any other possible solutions to your problem other than the ones listed in that thread.

OK back with a couple more questions, just to verify I'm doing everything correctly on this page.

For #1 - The value should be ISO-8859-1, correct?

and

For #5 - Should I just be uncommenting the line, as is? Or should I be uncommenting, then changing the value 'utf8' to 'ISO-8859-1' so they match?

1) This forum is using ISO-8859-1 and the pound symbol works here, so that appears to be correct.

2) Try utf8. I am not sure of the correct value. When it comes to determining the correct values for these collations and charsets I usually just search Google.

dB not vB?

Strangely, the £ pound sign works fine on my UK based forum pages.
This all works fine until a database restore is done, the ? question mark then appears.

So I wonder, is it a config in the dB as opposed to vB itself?

Pound symbol not working

I have been having the same issue, and going crazy trying to fix it.... whenever anyone uses the pound symbol. the post text stops at that symbol.


preview works fine showing the symbol but when saving or posting there is deletion from the symbol on.


did anyone find any way to fix this..... tried the directions above and nothing worked. disabled all products plugins didnt work. reverted to default, didnt work. out of ideas.....

Same problem here.

The symptom I was getting that all the text posted after the £ symbol was getting stripped.

I resolved it by setting the 'HTML Character Set' to utf-8

The table collations within the mysql database are set to: utf8_general_ci
