The only limit to the number of members that a vBulletin site can have both as registered users and users online at any one time is the server that vBulletin is installed on. There is no other limit, or one that anyone would ever exceed anyway, on the number of members that vBulletin can handle.

the only limit you can have on that side is the bandwidth related to your hosting account... not the software... the higher your bandwidth limit is, the better the connections are, so the members stay connected without waiting for access...

a lot of forums i vist have more than 1000 people online all the time, and they have no problem.
oh no, i'm not going with Xenforo... come on, i'm better than that... i stick with Wordpress... rofl

This depends entirely on the server. A shared server will handle considerably less than a VPN or Dedicated server. A cluster of servers can handle much more again.

We cannot provide advice about server requirements though. You will need to try somewhere like www.webhostingtalk.com to discuss your exact requirements.

There's no limit actually, you can have 100 or even 1000000000 members, there's no limit at all, each member will have his own row in the database and that depends on how much memory your host gives you.

The number of users that can be online at any one time is a matter of how much RAM and CPU you have on the server.

These are rough estimates and you may get better or worse results than this:

A typical $10-20/month shared web hosting account can handle up to about 25 users online simultaneously.
A typical VPS ($40-60/month) can handle 50-75 users online simultaneously.
A typical dedicated server ($99-249) can handle 125-300 users online simultaneously.
