How can I make a custom icon for the address bar?

Some websites have custom icons in the address bar on the far left side, how can I accomplish that for my site?

Make a 16px by 16px image and save it as favicon.ico and overwrite the existing one on your site. Make sure you keep a copy of it somewhere handy in case you accidentally overwrite it when doing any upgrades.

for those of you with IE problems...if you add another copy of it under a unique name customicon.ico and add to your header template

it will work. You might need to have your users either dump their history/cache or they can add it to their favorites...either way it does work. The prob is If you just put the favicon.ico file in the root of your domain, IE doesn't have any way of knowing if it changed. The current filename is compared against the known filename stored in the Url History database. When IE sees the filename has changed, it will download your new icon. Alternatively, you can ask your users to clear their history and cache (Tools->Internet Options->Delete Browsing History), which will also force IE to download the new file.
