    Maintenance and housekeeping

    Hello,

a recent problem with my scheduled tasks has got me thinking about maintenance and general housekeeping for the forums. What if any do you do, is reccommended to do??

    Thanks

When I backup my forum I usually:

    1) Check the mod / admin logs for suspicious activity and prune them.
    2) Run a repair / optimize on the database.
    3) Backup.

You may also wish to prune inactive users, old threads, etc. I personally like to keep all old content on my forum.

May I ask what exactly "Repair/Optimize" does? Is there any 'risk' in doing this? And if not, how often should this be performed if your forums run smoothly?

There is no risk. It just reports and fixes any db problems. It is smart to know that your db is ok before you make a backup, otherwise the backup might not be good which defeats the purpose.

Hey thats great. Lastly... how often should I perform this 'Repair/Optimize'? I backup daily and have a pretty big board.

There is no rule to follow. I usually do it once a month. Others do it more often.

Hey great.. thanks for the help. I forgot to ask...

Whenever I backup, or do this 'repair/optimize'... do I need to shut off my forums before doing so? Or can I just perform these actions with the forums live. Thanks so much for your help and support. You guys are worth every penny.

You don't need to shut the forums off, but if you can it would be better.

Although I'm running v3.6.4, I too was wondering what sort of Typical Maintenance I need to be doing. THANXX for the info here, now I know!
