Try this for fun, kinda weird...

Find an exisiting post, click edit
then simply hover your mouse over the icons back and forth (bold italic underline etc etc) and watch your post/edit input area expand sideways with every hover - watch the little horizontal scrollbar appear and carry on into the infinate!

edit, ha typical doesn't work here, might be my style - pixel borders or something, or my forms haveing a graphic as a background...

If you have your buttons border and padding settings correct, they should always take up the same space.

if border = 0px then padding should be 1
if border = 1px then padding should be 0

Otherwise, you'll get buttons that seem to move around while the displays adjust and an editor that seems to flip out.

Its a browser bug, its fixed in Firefox 1.5 nightlies.

I can't find the exact issue thats causing it else I'd fix it
