Is it safe to rebuild the search index without shutting down the boards?

I figure the search index will take 36 hours to rebuild but don't want to shut the boards down that long. Is this safe to do?

I don't believe this will cause any major problems. The forums will be a lot slower of course, and the rebuilding will take longer.
