chmod the /tmp directory to 777

How do I chmod the /tmp directory on the server to 777. Where is the tmp directory? I have and I know how to chmod but where is the tmp folder?

Have a specified a tmp directory?

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Server Settings and Optimization Options -> Safe Mode Temporary Directory

That is the directory you need to CHMOD. Follow that path.

If you haven't specified a tmp directory then you need to do so first, then navigate to that directory and CHMOD it.

You most likely have to have root access to the server to do thius. However, telnet or ssh into the server and run this from the command line:

          chmod 777 /tmp

I asked my webserver admins. I just dont understand why this happened out of the blue. Could a hacker do it? THanks for the fast replys!

Could they have? Sure. But I think a hacker would most likely do something other that change the permissions of the /tmp directory.

Very true! I had couple of hackers on my game servers banned them and stuff and you know me jumping to conclusions

I am connected to the server via telnet. Now I entered chmod 777 /tmp and it says: 500 CHMOD not understood

Are you sure you have telneted in and not used FTP? Are you on a Windows server?

You cannot run chmod from FTP. What application are you using to connect? Also do you have root acces to this server? If not then it's almost certain that you will not be able to change the permissions of the /tmp directory.

I was in telenet. I put open IP 21 posrt 21 is the only that worked. Then I logged in user XXXX pass XXXX tried chmod... didnt work. Maybe I dont have root access but I can change most everthing I want.
