HELP: - mysql error number: 1064

We have made no changes to our code and yet today I suddenly started to get this error when I try to update any user options from the Admin Control Panel.

We are currently on version 2.0.3 (yes I KNOW we need to upgrade.. I'm working on it, but have made NO changes to our live system.. Am testing the upgrade on a standalone laptop)

This is the error that I am getting:

“There seems to have been a slight problem with the database. Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser.

An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, who you can also contact if the problem persists.

    We apologise for any inconvenience.

Database error in vBulletin Control Panel: Invalid SQL: SELECT COUNT(*) AS users FROM user, usergroup WHERE user.usergroupid=usergroup.usergroupid AND usergroup.cancontrolpanel=1 AND user.userid<>
mysql error: You have an error in your SQL syntax near '' at line 1

    Any help would be appreciated!

You must update to 2.2.6 in order to fix this problem. It's an error caused by incompatibility with PHP 4.2.x.

...but don't use the files from there as you are running a very old version that will more than likely not work with those updated scripts.

I don't see a loginlog table in vB. Is this from a hack?

I'm having the same trouble and it is maddening.

I woke this morning to find errors on every page... I couldn't access the admin panel either.

Through the web host I downloaded the entire database and files from the server, deleted them, and tried a completely fresh install with shiny new database too.

Still the same errors . I can go through the install steps using install.php (the pretty vBulletin page comes up and it populates the database with the tables). But once I try to access the control panel, I get e-mailed errors like this:
Database error in vBulletin Control Panel 2.2.6:

Invalid SQL: SELECT user.*,userfield.* FROM user LEFT JOIN userfield ON userfield.userid=user.userid WHERE user.userid='1'
mysql error: You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'userid=user.userid WHERE user.userid='1'' at line 1

                  mysql error number: 1064

I've been in contact with the web host but he claims no changes or tweaks have been made to any of their server settings.

                  fwiw, here are the versions:

                  Kernel Version 2.4.9-31
                  Apache Version 1.3.26 (Unix)
                  Perl Version 5.006001
                  PHP Version 4.1.2
                  MySQL Version 3.23.45

and I tried installing vBulletin 2.2.6.

                  Thanks in advance.

p.s.... the url in the email "Script http://www.aorworld.com/forums/forums/admin/index.php" was generated by the email incorrectly. There should only be one "forums" in the url, so it should be:
