    track_vars & register_globals FAILED!

I need somebodies assistance. I am trying to install vB 2.0.3 but I seem to have hit a snag... on the first page of the installation. I've done a search here, but haven't found a difinitive answer on what is wrong or how to fix it. Please someone help me. This is what I see when I run the installation:

Welcome to vBulletin Version 2.0.3. Running this script will do a clean install of vBulletin onto your server.

Checking your server against vBulletin's requirements ...

    PHP version: 4.0.1pl2 ... Passed!
MySQL support in PHP ... Passed!
PCRE support in PHP ... Passed!
    magic_quotes_sybase disabled ... Passed!
    track_vars enabled ... Failed!
    register_globals enabled ... Failed!

Even if one of the above checks "failed," you may be able to proceed without problems. However, it is recommended that you adjust your settings so that all tests pass.

Does the install work if you choose to ignore the posted errors?

I haven't tried to continue with the installation yet. I was unsure what the effects would be if those were failing prior to installation - what is the worst that can happen? I guess, besides not being able to install? If it installs okay, can I assume that the board will function correctly?

Nothing really bad will happen if you continue and it breaks
If it installs OK, you can be fairly sure the board will be okay. It's still best to give it a quick test though (post an example message etc).

          register_globals = off -- won't be able to install (can't get past step 1)
track_vars = off -- won't be able to login into control panel; won't be able to post; you really won't be able to submit many forms

Alrighty, then to activate those variables, I gather I would need to adjust some stuff in the php.ini file. *Well*, I contacted my hosting provider and they told me that the php.ini file is actually empty and any changes in it would not affect the outcome of these variables... However, they said that I could add something to my vhosts.conf file that would be able to enable these variables... does any one here know what that command would be. The tech guy from my hosting company just said that I'd find it at php.net... well, I haven't been able to find it.

            Your help is appreciated.

              register_globals enabled ... Failed!

              I got the error..

              register_globals enabled ... Failed!

              But the board installed fine...
              Should I be worried?

Or is there a way to fix this problem?

If your register_globals test failed but you still installed succesfully (and can post succesfully etc), then you don't need to worry. It seems that there is abug that sometimes makes it report incorrect settings.

James - failing the register_globals test is a known issue with some versions of PHP, but having track_vars off will prevent just about every form in the admin control panel from working, as well as preventing new posts from being made.

Hmm, funny, if I hit post new thread I get a server not found message. Else I can look at the board...
But I don't think that this has to do sth with register_globals...
