    Rip of vBulletin!

Hello everyone. I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but I was searching throughout Hotscripts and I found a bulletin board system that looks WAY much like vBulletin 2.x in many ways, except its free.

The "Search" area looks the same, the post area, and the "Forum Rules" area that says "You [b]may[/b[ post in this forum looks pretty much the same, and many other things.

The link for their forums is here:

    Or their site here:

You guys tell me what you think? Am I crazy here? I'd hate the idea of someone getting a pirated vBulletin copy, or a forum that's identical to vBulletin in every way for free when I paid my good money.

This is a matter of discussion in forum feedback right now, although I suspect this and the other thread will be closed very soon.

I'm downloading it right now as well, but why would the thread be closed? I was just trying to help....

If you take a look at the code, the document structure is kinda the same, but the php is different. They stole the layout and some of the functionality ideas but that's about it

I didnt really examine the code, but just the thought that its SO close and the features are SO close as well mildly annoys me, because that's just like getting "Best Choice" canned green beans vs Green Giant. That's not a good example, but anyone could get that for free. I love vB alot, but cant they get in trouble for that?

Have you seen the "new post" layout of many bb's?

                  They're mostly similar.

                  Why?

Because it's all they can do to get it to work right.

I've personally seen the development of that script over the past year, and I'm pretty sure they didn't steal vBulletin's code.

That said, there are a few places that resemble each other. I personally think it's more 'inspired', as opposed to a 'rip'. Ripping inferrs directly copying something, with minor modifications. They've actually built the whole thing from scratch by themselves.

Extending on that, it's hard to make a modern forum that doesn't look like vB(2). Threads, forums, reply counts, stats, everything tends to be laid out in the same manner, everybody uses Verdana, etc.

Of course, if Jelsoft has a different opinion, that's a different matter given their intimate knowledge of their product.

I just looked at the code, and it's nothing like vB's.. But the look sure is.

Definitely have them look into that.

I have a bizillion forums set up on localhost... looks like I will have another to tinker with.

If it's not a rip, it's certainly a good imitation.

Edit: How long does it take to get the email?
