[Forum] VB 4.1.2 using too much memory, major loading issue Please Help!

So I have been running VB 4.1.2 for roughly one year now. Recently I have had a lot of issues with the site loading properly. Lots of broken images and entire pages loading without CSS styling. I contacted my host to discuss the issue and they say that my site is consuming too much memory and that page loads are being cut off. My host provides me unlimited storage and bandwidth, but only 512 mb CPU processing. My forum is active, but we've never seen more than 20 actual users online at a single time. I am wondering if this is common for VB to use this much memory, or is there an issue on my end?

Could this be the result of:
    a bad plugin?
a large amount of attachments (stored in file not db)?
    not properly maintaining my databases?

Any ideas on where to begin troubleshooting an issue like this?
Is there a plugin to reduce the amount of resources vb uses?
Do I need to upgrade my hosting to a plan with a 1gig processor? <--Expensive

Any help would be appreciated. Please visit http://www.autofocuspa.com to see how it loads for you.

512mb of cpu processing? Uhh I am guessing you copied that wrong.

Find a less crappy webhost though.

So does VB really require more than my host is providing me?

If you're on a VPS, 512mb is barely enough memory to run cPanel and all of the software a server needs to run, let alone ahving an active website.

I'm sorry but I have got be slightly skeptical of this answer because everything worked fine for almost a year.

Most likely is that another (or more) heavy user has been added to the VPS physical box.
I'm guessing that this is a Virtuozzo VPS as well, which can be overloaded by other VPS users.
Move to a XEN based service - you won't look back.

512 is VERY light for a vB VPS (or any php app for that matter), you have been 'on the edge' for a while.

Going back to the original questions...

Could this be the result of:
              a bad plugin? Yes
a large amount of attachments (stored in file not db)? Doubtful.
not properly maintaining my databases? Not much to maintaining databases except regular backups. You should not need to run repair or optimize on a regular basis.

Any ideas on where to begin troubleshooting an issue like this?

Thanks for the more in-depth answers. I am currently having my host move me over to the 1 gig hosting package that they offer. I am hoping that this will help site loading issues. Once that is done, I will still go back and try anything I can to make sure my CPU usage is as low as possible, then I'll probably be shopping around for a new host in a few months, as this plan costs double what my old plan cost.
