I want all users that post or reply to a thread subscribe to the threads automatically, is this possibly?
Automatic thread subscription option?

In Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> User Registration Options
Near the bottom -> Options -> Automatic Thread Subscription Mode
You can set the type of default subscription.
Users will always have the ability to change it themselves in their User CP settings.
It will only affect new users, it will not change settings for existing users.
Existing users can change the settings in their Settings -> General Settings -> Default Thread Subscription Mode. -
You can also run the SQL query "instant email notification" if you want to change all existing members too.Comment

Thanks, this thread helped me. I have a new forum that has a little momentum already (10+ posts per day) and the instant e-mail notification was turned off. I figured it's better to turn it on to keep the conversations going and also run the instant e-mail notification query for my existing 168 users.
Any other suggestions to make sure the forum stays going? http://www.CPSObsessedForums.com
Besides the more general promotion ideas (spend $$ on targeted Google ads, ask new users to help promote the site, etc.) are there other basic tweaks like the one above you think I should apply?
Thanks!

I would NOT enable instant notification for your users without prior permission- many will consider it spam and if they report your emails your email server could land on blacklists.Comment

It's the default on most sites I sign up to... in any case, it's now going to be on by default for new registrations and also for new threads in which existing registered users participate. I don't think it's going to start sending them e-mail for threads where they already participated.Comment

It will send them emails for threads they are subscribed to when there is a replyComment

You might want to exclude members who have explicitly chosen another option.
-1 = "Do not Subscribe"
0 = "Subscribe without notification"
1 = "Instant email notification"
2 = "Daily email notification"
3 = "Weekly email notification"
So, maybe the query would be
Code:update USER set autosubscribe=1 where autosubscribe < 0
