Boolean search with quotes = inconsistent results?

    Hi,

we use the vBulletin Search Engine.

Boolean search is AFAIK the default behavior for this engine.

However, even when using quotes (around a phrase) the search engine - unlike Google - may show me posts that only contain one of the words inside the quotes, and not the full phrase.

This is in VB 3.7.2, using 5.2.6 and MySQL 5.0.51a.

So - it seems that I can't search for phrases using the built-in search engine, unless I've missed something essential here...?

Sometimes, it even seems that if I eg. search for "one two three", only two is seen as a match, because the search engine seem to assume that "one and three" are words.

I must be missing something - but what?

Phrase searching should work if you have fulltext enabled:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Search Type (on the left, not the right)

And your usergroup is allowed to use boolean search:

Admin CP -> Usergroups -> Usergroup Manager -> Edit Usergroup -> Can Use Boolean Search

But I think the individual words in the phrase search are still subject to the character limits of the search engine:

      But not with vB search?
I'm not sure if I remember right, but I believe we switched to VB search in order to be able to search for 2 character long words (does that make sense)?

The default vBulletin search engine does not support phrase searching.

You can adjust the minimum word length for fulltext too, but it requires modifying the MySQL configuration which is more involved. See the link I posted before.
