User groups and private forums

ARRGHH!
Just had a terrible time trying to do something as simple as add a new moderator and give them access to the private forum. Ended up locking myself out 3 times, having to go into the database and readjust my user group so I could get back into the control panel.

Can somebody please give a step-by-step easy to understand description of how to set up user groups and private forums. I had to switch off my private forum I just can't get it to be properly private :(

I anyone tell me what my correct setup should be, I have a simple situation there is myself and two moderators. I need the two moderators plus myself to have access to one private forum and nobody else to be able to see it.

Help! This stuff is driving me round the bend!!!

It worked before but neither setting the forum to be private nor adding forum permissions for every type of user and setting everything to no makes the forum invisible, whats gone wrong???

Forums > Modify > Find forum and click edit > Switch forum to private forum

This will then make the forum invisible to everyone, bar logged in admins and moderators. Worked for me anyway...

Yes exactly that is how it should work. Indeed that is how it did work. However performing those actions no longer results in the forum being private - it is open to the world for everyone to see.

Something is obviously wrong here, how come anyone can see what is supposed to be and is selected as a private forum?

It is probably stating the obvious, but re-check your usergroups - make sure you didn't accidently add permission for the 'Registered' group to view the forum.

User levels Unregistered, Lot logged in and awaiting confirmation each have a forumpermission for the private forum but all the option are set to 'no'.

You can see this in the dump of the database I did above forum no 14 for user types 1 2 and 3 all set to 0.

Under general options there is now:

hideprivateforums <Yes> <No>

Select 'yes' here to hide private forums from users who are not allowed to access them. Users who do have permission to access them will have to log in before they can see these forums too. This option applies to the forum home page, and the Jump To... box.
