That is dated 2014, although I dont recall any hack at that time (then again, its a long time ago now).
It most likely it dates from when someone hacked into the IB network from a stage server,...

Thats a php error, you need to be running at least php 5.6.
Looks like when you use the cli (shell) you are running an older version
(php -v should tell you).

Security updates are free, and always have been. Only one has ever been released for 3.8.6, that being PL 1.
It is your fault if you are running a version thats at least 7.5 years...

Personally I would suggest for step 5 you just rename the vBulletin 3.X folder to something obscure for now, dont delete it until you are certain you dont need anything from it....

Not exactly.
vB5 was initially based off vB 4.1.4.
The feature was only added to vB4 in the 4.2.x series, and was never added to vB5....
