Will vBulletin handle ACTIVE ACTIVE board??

I have a community message board that gets between 2000-3000 posts A DAY!

We have outgrown most message board apps and are looking for a scalable board system (preferably written for PHP/MySQL).

We just upgraded to Discus 4.0, but it's not handling the traffic. (PERL, oy!)

Does anyone out there have a board with comparable posting traffic that we do? Can vBulletin handle it?? PLEASE SAY YES!

    Respond here or via email:
    [email protected]
    positive & negative testimonials appreciated!!

Yes we can handle it but it all depends on the power of your server. What do you currently have or expect to put vBulletin on?

how many concurrent users average and max do you get?

you'll definitely need a much more powerful server

            something like

            single P3 1.26ghz tualatin with 512k L2 cache
            1gb ram
            scsi 10,000 rpm disk

celeron won't do much good at all

we have vB forums generating 4,000 to 10,000 posts/day but they're all on 2 x dual cpu server setups or 1 x dual cpu server setups with at least 1 gb ram

512M to 1 gig of ram?

Add as much ram as you can afford. It's cheap at the present and the more ram you have the better your board will run.

Not sure what to say about the Celeron. Although great for a laptop or a small desktop, honestly this would be way under powered to achieve your mentioned goal from what I'm seeing.

Not sure if you own the server or if you are leasing, but I'de look into a bit of a more powerful setup.

Maybe something like a PIII 1gig processor minimum or a duely is even better.

when I first started out in November, I had my forum on a
Celeron 533 , 512mb ram, actually its still there as well, before I did my forum, I had a max of 200 users online at one time
and the forum still hauled ass,

As I understand it, www.sitepointforums.com is run on a 650 Mhz Athlon Server with 18.1 gigabytes of disk space and 512 megabytes of RAM.

That is true at the moment. However we plan to upgrade to a Dual 1.4 Gigahertz machine with 2 Gigabytes of RAM and a 100 gigabyte RAID-based storage system.

In order to keep our server up and running it has been optimized to the teeth. So much so that we don't use Apache to server images because there is too much overhead. We use a separate HTTP daemon process to serve images.

Is that on the same server on a different port or are you using a proxy frin-end? I ran a seperate daemon for a while but people were complaining that they couldn't see the images as there work firewall only allowed port 80. Obviously I couldn't run both servers on port 80 from the same server. In the end I picked up a $99/month Celeron for serving ads, images, DNS and mail. It works quite well but I still want more power!

shhh, I forgot to mention that but I did see you were upgrading because I was amazed that you could even run it off a 650 for even 2 seconds!
