    Starting out...Wordpress/VBulletin/GoDaddy

    Hi,

    Thank you for reading!

So to begin, I am looking at starting my own online community.

    I currently have:

My own Domain name (through GoDaddy)
    Hosting through Wordpress (Managed Wordpress)

I want my future community/customers to go to www.MYWEBSITE.com and enter Vbulletin.

Do I need wordpress? I am slightly confused by this.

Or do I simply need my own domain & hosting and purchase a VBulletin package?

    Thank you in advance!

    Phil

Do you just want a forum / community? If so then vBulletin is all you need, Wordpress won't add anything. If you did use Wordpress, your users would need separate logins to both platforms, and the styles would not match.

    You can either:

    1. Purchase a self-hosted vBulletin license ($249), buy a hosting package from a third party hosting company, buy your domain, and install vBulletin in the root so that www.domain.com goes straight to your forum.

    OR

    2. Purchase a monthly vBulletin Cloud package, in which case we host it for you. Buy your domain, we give you instructions to get your domain pointed to your vBulletin Cloud instance. Then going to www.domain.com goes straight to your forum.

Our self-hosted license details are here: http://www.vbulletin.com/en/features/
Our cloud packages are listed here: http://www.vbulletin.com/en/vbulletin-cloud/

With the self-hosted option, you can also pay us to carry out the actual installation for you, once you have your hosting package set up. This is an additional $149.
Cloud packages are installed for you so that doesn't apply to them.

      Hi Mark,

Thank you ever so much. Thats very helpful!

Yes, I am looking to start my very own online community.

I have been researching what would work best as I have noticed some websites have forums built into them - but I think this distracts from the community element of the forum. I would probably prefer simply having a forum.

I am interested in creating something simple yet effective (Similar to www.skyscrapercity.com )

      Many thanks,

      Phil

That site runs vBulletin 3, which is an old (but still maintained) version, so with option 1 out of my list you can actually run that same software - as a self-hosted license gives you the right to run ONE instance of the software for life, but it can be any of the three versions (vB3, vB4, vB5).

The Cloud option only runs vB5.

I would be tempted to go with option 1 and get yourself a reasonable shared hosting package somewhere, ideally one that lets you upgrade the resources if your site grows, bit not one that ties into a long contract. Then decide which version you want to run. vB3 as mentioned is perfectly serviceable but rather old now, vB4 is very feature rich and there are loads of third party add-ons and styles available. vB5 is the only one of the three that has active development (in other words, new features and bug fixes), you wll find it needs more resources than the earlier versions though so bear that in mind when looking at hosting packages.

The Cloud option is great if you want to run vB5 but aren't sure whether the site will take off - as there's no long term commitment with the monthly packages. Some people start out on cloud and then if the site takes off they can migrate the site to self hosted later on - though obviously they'd have to stick with vB5 at that point, you can upgrade upwards but you can't downgrade backwards.

Final point - modifications and styles. Cloud does not allow third party add-ons are styles to be imported, though you can create your own styles and there's a load included with vB5 (you can see them on this site, using the dropdown at the bottom). You can also add your own css to cloud too.

          Thank you again! Valuable information.

Due to the fact that there is no guarantee that my forum will take off, I will likely need something month by month as I don't think long term commitment at this is wise.

Do you think vB5 is a good choice, (Cloud option) for a new forum (brand new, still creating content)

          Thank you

Yes, for a new forum vB5 is a good option, it has a lot of drag - and - drop functionality, whilst still retaining the powerful admincp from older versions.

when I try to open up the admin panel it loads up an error 404 - Not Found

The page you are trying to access does not exist.

                    Hello

I'm afraid you re still showing as unlicensed. We are unable to provide any support until your forum account shows up as licensed, at which point you would need to post in the correct support forum.

To do this, please go here:

...and enter your email address (the one you used to register on the forums) in one of the boxes. You'll need to have your customer number and password to access that page.

Once done, the update of your account can take an hour or so.

Great, you are showing as licensed now. Make sure you have renamed the file htaccess.txt in your website root directory to .htaccess

The period before the filename is essential.

If that doesn't solve the issue please create a support ticket from the Member's Area as you have 30 days of ticket support with your forum purchase. This will be the quickest way to resolve the issue. The more details you can give us in the support ticket (Administrator info, FTP details) the better. There is a "Sensitive Data" box in the support ticket system where you should include usernames, passwords, and other sensitive info.

I do see your ticket, it is in the queue, I can't pick it up right now because I am about to leave but if it hasn't been answered later by the time I come back I'll take a look.

The quick answer is the videos should be ignored, they are for old versions of the software and have nothing to do with current versions.

You do not need to worry about setting URLs or Paths in config.php files, they are all automatic these days. The main place URLs must be set is when creating the forum and later in the Admin CP -> Settings -> Options -> Site Name / URL / Contact Details if there are any changes.
