    vb 5 install

My vb4 is installed in my site root. I do not want to have to create a directory to install vb5. Do you have an import tool available so I can do a fresh install of vb5 and import my vb4 over? Or do you have another way I can upgrade without creating a separate directory?

Of course you can upgrade from vB4 to vB5. However, keep in mind that not all features of vB4 are already available in vB5 (e.g. the CMS).

I don't use the CMS for the site I want to upgraded, but I read that you must install vb5 an a separate directory.

You need to make sure vB4 files are not left over in the vB5 folder, they can cause conflicts.

So I can remove all the vb4 files from the root, upload the vb5 file to the root, then run the vb5 upgrade?

Yes, I'd suggest archiving your vBulletin 4 files, instead of deleting them.

Yes, I will be backing up everything before I remove any of the vb4 files. Now do I still have to use any URL re-writing?

Yes, URL rewriting in absolutely required for VB5 regardless.

                  Ok, just so I'm clear.

                  1) Backup my vb4 install and database.
                  2) Remove ALL vb4 files/folder from the directory (in my case, it's in the root)
                  3) Upload the vb5 files to the root
                  4) Edit the config file so it can connect to my current vb4 database.
                  5) Run the vb5 upgrade script.

I should not have any issues if I follow these instructions correct?

Provided your attachments are not in the file system.

vB5 is unequivocally the best forum software, but not yet...

No, they are in the database. SO I'm good then?

                        Yes.

Just get a bottle of scotch.
Later on you can blame it for the decision, going from vB4 to vB5.
