    Will vb4 mods work on vb5?

    Just wondering, we have a cleaning site and thinking about switching over to vb5

    Don't do it. Have you seen how slow this site is working? Wait until VB5 is stable.

      VB4 mods will absolutely not work with VB5. They need to be completely re-written.

        vBulletin 4 uses a plugin architecture where addons attach to a hook and the code is inserted into the database. When the hook is called in the code, any plugins attached to it are called as well. This was easy to use and served its purpose well. However it has some issues including security issues on storing code in the database.

        vBulletin 5 uses an API architecture and addons are implemented via API extensions. Any API that is extendible can be used by Addon developers. This can give them more access to make the changes they want to. However it is a bit more secure and easier to install. Extensions auto-install after being uploaded to the server so that is one step out of the way. It also removes the code from the database.

        As such, your vB4 addons won't work with vB5. We're working with a number of developers to get addons converted to vB5 though.
