I am assuming that the only way a forum can generate money is through advertising. Is that correct? Thanks

I have site supporters who pay a subscription fee.
A site supporter image is added below their username. Their username is Bold and Red.
Additional PMs. Some options are unlimited.
Plus it gives them a warm and fuzzy feeling that they are helping towards paying the bills.
How much money are you talking about?
Enough to maintain your forum or quit your job?
I'm generating enough to cover expenses and a little extra for my hobby.
I think it would be a mistake to think you will be generating a income immediately....steven

Expenses are
- license(s)
- hosting fees
- domain registration
Additional expenses for me are
- donations or payment for modifications
- Site decals
- Additional software
And with income come income tax, depending where you live....steven
