SMF user looking for an upgrade. Is vBulletin for me?

I am using SMF now, but I get so much spam it's insane! Various porn, insurance and the next great pill, etc.

The other forum was good, but I need a professional forum for my professional website. So, is vBulletin right for me? What spam prevention tools does it offer?

    Thanks,

    Rob

Something to keep in mind is no forum software is spam free. vBulletin has Captcha built into it. Also on the registration page you can setup questions and have the user signing up answer it (to verify they are human). This plus a few hacks over at vBulletin.org will help keep spam down to a minimum.

When you get spam, can you ban by IP, username, etc?

I had a guy that posted daily. Changed his IP all the time and used variances of his username. Since my customers are all USA, can we ban all IP outside USA or restrict registration to just USA?

I'm sure some one has written something to do all of that and more. it'd be on vbulletin.org , where the plugins, hacks, etc are for vbulletin.

Also, you're never going to get rid of adventurous spammers. My forum won't allow users to register without verifying their email, answering a random question about world of warcraft, and filling in 7 custom required fields with valid options (i.e. in warcraft you can be a human mage but you can't be a human hunter. if you choose an invalid pair, youl can't register, and of course the default options are invalid).

yet, i still clean about 20 new registrations that are all spammers.

Yep, I know I won't stop all spammers, but I spend about 30-45 minutes each day deleting posts, users, etc and I was just looking for a better solution. Got to be something better!

I think I'll go with VB and see how it goes.

I would suggest not deleting users because they're just going to sign back up.
