    Concern for vB5

    Hello,

I am concerned about the date of release for vB5, in the past each version has lasted 3 years + i think but what is approximate life of vB4. If I decide to purchase the vB4 for $235and the vB5 is released within a year. This is highly unlikely however the terms state that the updates are available for the life of vB4, which may indeed be a year . Is there a minimum period that the updates for vB4 be available to its users?

I would like a response from the officials if possible. Thank you for your time

They can not give us a date for vb4 to be released; how can you expect a date on vb5 !!!

Its just a risk you have to take. I am happy to take it.

I don't think there is any minimum time, apart from when you buy it and it EOLs or you move up to vB 4. No one seems to have stepped on it, but it should be around 18-24 months from vb4 that we see vB 5 - and we know that work on vB 5 has already started.

Ray said they will start working on it in +-18 months. But I wouldn't expect the release of vb5 in 2 years from now. Maybe three.

6 months ago Ray stated that vb5 may be knocking in 18 months. So thats 12 months from now.

But really: no one knowns. IB can only try to have it ready by then. a vb4 license is good for lifetime use of vb4. vb4 updates will be for a limited time after vb5 release though. In the announcement forum Ray posted an example of how IB sees end of life.

I sse it this way: we want to see vbulletin in development. progress. That costs money. If you do not want to pay for this progress or if you cant, then you have the option to stick with vb4.

Its really a choice between getting more / better functionality or not paying more and sticking to a version.

To clarify, we expect the time between major version releases (e.g., between 4.0 and 5.0) to be in the range of 18-24 months. No, we haven't started work on 5.0 yet. Currently we are working on 4.0; then we will work toward 4.1, with frequent maintenance releases along the way.

Just to clarify, by work, I mean at least in the planning stages, which IB CTO Joe Rosenblum has confirmed to have occured - Ray could you clarify this for us?

Yes, we're planning and roadmapping; we're just not coding.

Thanks Ray, will we get to see a roadmap for vB 4 though?

Yes, Don is presently deep into getting the roadmap ready to release. As soon as it's ready, we'll publish it here on vb.com.

If you could give some assurance how long each version would be supported (v4, v5, etc) that would truly set many minds at ease, regardless of how often new versions are released.
