    Beginners Question

Hi, I was wondering if someone could take the time to explain basically how VBulletin works in laymans terms.
I am a user of a site hosted by Vbulletin and have had an idea for my own site, problem is I am one of those people who doesn't even know what ram and bytes are.
Am I right in saying that I have to get a web page with particular attributes ,and then downlad Vbulletin to that site and away we go?
    Thanks, Tackle

You need a web host with the minimum requirements list at
    http://www.vbulletin.com/features.php (lower left corner)
    ...steven
    www.318ti.org (vB3.8) | www.nccbmwcca.org (vB4.2)
    bmwcca.org/forum | m135i.net

Yes. I recommend www.justhost.com. It's 41.88 for a year. I went to register and decided to close the window before giving my credit card number, and a message popped up offering me 50% off. Then you buy vbulletin and upload it to the host. Hope that helps.

      Good luck,
      Angela

I wouldn't go with justhost at all. It's just an overseller.

          Thanks folks,
It all sounds very easy but I guess I'll find any snags along the way
What is an overseller? What would you suggest Dilly?I will do some research on anything suggested. Thanks again.

vB5 is unequivocally the best forum software, but not yet...

So an overseller says they'll give you x then really only gives you < x ???

I am in NZ and have rung around web design places and hosting places. I feel like I may be about to be ripped off due to my lack of knowledge on the subject. All I want to do is set up a community based forum using Vb and the quote I got was for $2500-$3500 NZ. Thats about $2000 USD.

If that is what it costs then thats ok, but does it sound overly expensive to you guys/gals?

My god, yes, that is way too expensive. I recommend Site5, I've never had a problem with them, their support is excellent, and they have wonderful deals.

If your trying to shy away from oversellers then don't choose site5.

                  Medialayer.com
                  Steadfast.net
                  cartikahosting.com

                  all high quality non oversellers

Site5 is not an overseller. I've been with them for about a year now and everything they said I would get I got.

                        Now we're cooking with gas!
I thought it shouldn't be that expensive.
                        Thankyou Beishe8.
I just went to a site called siteground. They claim to be able to do everything required, a one stop shop if you will. Have you heard of them?
If I did it cheaply initially to see how it goes, would it look fairly normal but just be less capable of handling traffic? ie would it basically look like the forum we are in right now?
                        Thanks again

Do not buy everything from one shop.

I would recommend namecheap.com to buy your domain.
~$10 with free WhoisGuard for the first year

                          Webspace: hostgator.com

Yes. It would not be for thousands of members.

                          Edit:

Namecheap have released a coupon code for November 2008. Using this coupon code will allow you to register domain names at Namecheap for $8.81.
Namecheap November 08 Coupon Code : FIRSTSNOW
