It was a tax added for EU nations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Value_added_tax).

Because VAT is something that applies to just the EU, and no other countries.

It isn't a direct exchange at current rates. Prices are input and updated periodically manually.

I heard VAT can be a pain. Our company sells product in the EU and has to collect that. There was a story on a local channel the other night that California wants to collect tax on internet sales, including scripts like vB and IPB.

                Just California?

I'm truly surprised that we haven't been paying tax on internet purchases way before now.

California already collects state sales tax on all internet purchases from companies in California. The problem is there are 58 counties in California and each has its own sales tax rules.

But I wouldn't worry too much about the Streamlined Sales Tax Initiative. The 50 states have been debating it since 2000 and it isn't even past the conjecture state yet. The Federal Government would have to institute a national sales tax similar to VAT for it to happen.
