Let me try to explain another way. Let's say a hypothetical Joe posts a question on the forum. Tom and Dick answer Joe's question. Harry posts a message to Dick in the thread unrelated to Joe's question. Dick replies to Harry. So only Tom and Dick's first message are answers to Joe's question. We can notify Joe of these relevant replies in email and not to the irrelevant messages between Harry and Dick. Also, if we know which messages are to Joe and that he hasn't read them, we might want to wait to post more replies until he has read them. We'd have to know which messages were intended for Joe to flag whether he had read them or not.

There is no function in vB to do this. Sorry.

The threaded mode is close to what you want regarding the display... (vb has 3 thread display modes) While viewing a thread look at the top right for the display mode tool and switch to the threaded display mode.
