    Licenses suggestion:

I think vBulletin should have a monthly pay license, it would probably end up making vbulletin more money, plus alot of people would like to pay for a month to test it, or two months to test it and see if they like it.

    Just a suggestion.

Yeah sounds cool, though you'd probably get a boost in pirating.

Yeah, it's a good idea as some companies may only need a license for a month or two for a forum so paying the $85 for a year will be a waste.

Or if one month is too short for a license, 3 months? 6 months? x months?

How about licensing by the day? By the hour? Lets take on Fido's marketing strategy, licensing by the second!

        [/offtopic]

But I do like the idea of 3/6 months

That might be quite a hassel for vBulletin to manage. I think more along the lines of bi-annually and annually options would work better.

we have a copy of the Zend encoder so we could theoretically provide time restricted copies of vBulletin only problem would be you couldn't hack them.

This would be good for a trial version of vBulletin, unrestricted usage but then it "locks up" after the trial period is over.

Yeah, couldn't you offer free trials for say, 2 days for them to test the product?

Just imagine the pirated copies that would arise. Since php is rather easy to modify (text editor), I'm sure most anyone could alter a trial version to work as the full.

                    Zend Encoder would prevent that.

But with the zend encoder, its not as simple as a text editor

What I was saying was Jelsoft could use Zend Encoder to offer free trials which expire after 2 days or so?

                          That's also a good idea.

                          But I can't see what's wrong with a 6 month license...it could be around $50?

Why don't you implement the new "customer number" check in a file of it's own, and then just Zend it? Then pirates could not edit the function therefore making a user enter the customer number before a install or upgrade .

Indeed, this would prevent all vB3 pirated copy's since only nuts would release their customer number with a "spy-fixed" vb (think about how easy it is to be tracked down then ).
