Why is a .gif file becoming .jpg?

On this forum I'm trying to upload a .gif file as attachment.
    It is repeatedly becoming .jpg.

In my 4.2 forum .gif stay .gif

    Why is that?

Probably because animated gifs are disabled - they are converted to jpg to stop them being animated.

It depends on if the image you're uploading is larger than what is allowed. If the file goes over the filesize, we resize the image, sometimes it gets changed to jpg.

It is due to old GIF licensing rules and the abilities of the GD Library across different versions of PHP.
