For me it´s very slow here since VB5 is running. Most of the times I get a nice Time Out Error after waiting over a minute for the "New Topics". Today the same. I´m not able to see the "New Topics". Not too much fun to be here.

We try to improve the building of these views with Caching. Guest users are heavily cached for instance. We only build their pages once every 5 minutes. So in essence they are behind the times. On top of that with Guests we use a tool called Varnish which converts those Page views into HTML files. So they never actually use the software and are just being fed cached pages.

With registered users, it is more dynamic and things are updated quicker. Most caches are held for shorter times and then rebuilt.

Again with licensed customers, they see different things still. This is stored as well.

With the issue in this thread it is most likely related to the unread_only filter on searches. We can't cache this for groups. Each visitor is going to have their own list of unread threads that is then inserted into the cached page view.

Finally there is local storage. We try to take advantage of this for things like phrases, reused templates and other items you'll use on multiple pages. You can turn off Local Storage. So this will increase your viewing time. Same with caching the Javascript and CSS. If those are cached and not downloaded again, you'll have better speeds. If they are downloaded, they add latency. We try to defer a lot of this to the end of the page load so you can read before acting on the page. However with some systems this can cause the page to seemingly freeze while your viewing it as well.

In short, there are a lot of variables involved.
      thanks

No speed issues with this forum here in Australia on a 100Mbit cable connection. In fact, I'd have to say it's running faster than it ever has, "New Topics" included.

Does it load quicker if one has a license?

The views you're looking at are more likely to be cached.

If New Posts is too slow for you right now, please try today's posts. It doesn't have the Unread_only filter which is the source of the speed issue from my testing.

No, but if you don't have a license then it's difficult to see why this is of such concern to you.

I am pretty sure they are able to check if someone has a license registered to its account.

Maybe he/she is a potential customer, who is observing the vB5 forum speed HERE at vb.com ?

It can be their concern, and I agree with the person. vB5 does seem slower in terms of speed compared to even vB3.

EDIT: their latest post now states they are using their "own" forum. Which in that case makes sense now.

Perhaps speed concerns is depending on the browser they use.

                            For my experience :
with IE8, it is catastrophic here or on my site.
with FF23 or Chrome, that is OK.
                            iPhone 5 OK
                            I openned JIRA about it.

When browsing this site with FF 26, I don't find it "unbearably slow" anymore. However, there is always room for some improvement, so I guess vB5 will still become faster over time.

Nothing much will be done regarding IE8. It's an old browser now.

I do understand that this leaves XP users stranded from an IE perspective, but to those I would say, try Firefox or Chrome.
