    Selling points to upgrade...

Hi all. I want to apologize to the Admins/moderators if I didn't post this in the right section of if I can find the answer elsewhere on the forum, but I have been searching for a long time with no success.

I am a moderator at http://forum.canadiens.com/ , the official fan forum for the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League. I was the very first moderator named to that forum which has been up and running since 2003. They were using phpBB and with hard work and convincing and after falling victims to a few hacks, I finally managed to convince them into purchasing vBulletin. We are extremely happy with the program. It was an easy sell for me to convince them to go to vBulletin with the great features this forum provides, but I'm running into a bit tougher sell.

My dilemma now is to convince them of upgrading from the version we're currently using (3.5.4) to the most recent version. I need to present the Admin there with a list of reasons to justify them taking the time to do this. Since I am not familiar at all with the technical aspect of such upgrades (I don't do installations and major changes there, as I have full access to the moderators panel but limited access to the Admin panel), I need something that's not too technical to present them with, something that will make them go "Wow, we better get on that now" type thing.

Is there such list on the forum somewhere that I might have missed while searching for it, or would someone be kind enough to provide me with features and reasons to convince them to do the upgrade?

The second part of my question would be regarding the automated Spam, computer generated. Right now, in order to stop it, we are manually moderating all members joining and it's cut back on that sort of things, but I'm thinking that since it's been such a serious problem everywhere, the latest version might have something in there helping protect against such Spam. We are a forum for fans of all ages and there is nothing more disturbing than seeing pornographic spam on a site like ours... If there's nothing in the newest version, I'm pretty sure that I should be able to search this forum for my answers.

Thank you in advance and once again, I'm sorry if this should not be posted here or if the answer is somewhere out there where I couldn't find it.

    Regards.

    JL.

You don't need a list of reasons, just two:

    1) More secure code
    2) More efficient code

I advice you upgrade to the latest 3.5.x version if you are not ready to upgrade to 3.6.x version yet.

There are lots of other methods to reduce spam bots joining etc. I believe Steve Machol has a thread about that somewhere (cant remember exactly where - have a quick search).
