I see the "Mark this blog read" link - can I use that functionality to...

Is there a conditional that I can use to make the navbar link change when there are new blog entries to read? Making it like Gmail where it had the number of new entries in parentheses after the "Blogs" link would be cool.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
