How does vBulletin send email?

Hi,

I've been using vBulletin for quite some time now. I wish to know the following -

I recently sent email to about 12000 members asking them to activate their account. I sent email through the admin panel mail send functionality.

The mail was sent quite rapidly (about 300 mails in one go). Is this dangerous? I bet it is not. However I am curious to know how does vbulletin send email (without using SMTP!). Is the technique used by vbulletin the best way to send email?

Without SMTP it uses the mail settings in PHP to send email.

Is it the php's mail() function that's being used? I've heard that php's mail function surrenders to mails over 200.

That would be an imposed limit from your webhost, nothing more.
