You cannot check for the thread starter in a condition without custom PHP code to pull the user record itself.
TO check for a tag you can try this,
<if condition="in_array('news', array($threadinfo['taglist']))">img code here</if>Translations provided by Google.

Na, the output would be affected per thread, not per usergroup. So the user would see different things based on what type of user started the thread, not what type of group the user viewing the thread is in.Comment

Not exactly sure it would. Probably need to explode the taglist before putting it in an array since its a single string separated by commas. However explode is not one of the safe PHP Functions that you can use in a template conditional. This would need a plugin unfortunately.Translations provided by Google.
