    Post install problem with strange ASCII characters appearing before DOCTYPE

    I have been trying to upgrade my forums to the latest release, but after the upgrade, I'm getting some strange characters that show in the top left corner of the page (visible in Firefox, but blank in IE and Chrome).

    The characters are:

    If I view the source, the first two lines are:
    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" dir="ltr" lang="en">
    I can login to the ACP, but the left frame shows only the vBulletin logo, but none of the usual menu choices. The right frame looks fine.

    I've reuploaded all the non-image files in ASCII mode, but the problem persists.

    I've also tried loading the default style (styleid=1, which I haven't modified) and still have the same problem.

    Any suggestions?

    Here's what the source of the left frame in the ACP looks like:
    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3c.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/loose.dtd"><HTML dir=ltr lang=en xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><HEAD><META content="IE=7.0000" http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible"><TITLE>GetGamer - vBulletin Admin Control Panel</TITLE><META content="text/html; charset=utf-8" http-equiv=Content-Type><LINK rel=stylesheet type=text/css href="../cpstyles/vBulletin_3_Silver/controlpanel.css"><STYLE type=text/css>		.page { background-color:white; color:black; }		.time { color:silver; }	</STYLE> <SCRIPT type=text/javascript>	<!--	var SESSIONHASH = "";	var IMGDIR_MISC = "../cpstyles/vBulletin_3_Silver";	var CLEARGIFURL = "./clear.gif";	function set_cp_title()	{		if (typeof(parent.document) != 'undefined' && typeof(parent.document) != 'unknown' && typeof(parent.document.title) == 'string')		{			parent.document.title = (document.title != '' ? document.title : 'vBulletin');		}	}	//-->	</SCRIPT> <SCRIPT type=text/javascript src="../clientscript/yui/yahoo-dom-event/yahoo-dom-event.js"></SCRIPT> <SCRIPT type=text/javascript src="../clientscript/yui/connection/connection-min.js"></SCRIPT> <SCRIPT type=text/javascript src="../clientscript/vbulletin_global.js"></SCRIPT></HEAD><BODY style="MARGIN: 0px" onload=set_cp_title(); htc="19"><!-- END CONTROL PANEL HEADER --><DIV><IMG title="Admin Control Panel" border=0 hspace=4 alt="" vspace=4 src="../cpstyles/vBulletin_3_Silver/cp_logo.gif"></DIV><DIV style="PADDING-BOTTOM: 4px; PADDING-LEFT: 4px; WIDTH: 168px; PADDING-RIGHT: 4px; PADDING-TOP: 4px"></DIV></BODY></HTML>
