3.7 resource hungry

Simply put, the performance of my site has dropped DRASTICALLY from 3.6.8 to 3.7.0 rc4.

my off hour load (330 am here now) is currently my usual peak noon-5pm ish load on 3.6.8, and i'm noticing longer page load times.


are there sql indexes i should add that the installer doesn't address?
maintenance scripts i should run?

Are you using a datastore cache like APC or XCache, as is recommended?

I ran xcache in the past, and frankly, i was never happy with it.

it caused at least one segfault in apache a day, made changing things like config files a total pain (as it tried to load the cached one), and in all, it brought my server load down .2 in load.... not worth it.

I was perfectly fine on 3.6.8 running steady .6 loads in heavy traffic for months.

my loads are still ok, but it just in general runs slower.

Will you give APC a try? I've never had any serious issues with it.

At the end of the day, the accelerators aren't what i'm after.

I realize 3.7 adds new features, but the vast majority of them don't at all effect the main forumhome or showthread pages... they are off in their own social networking world.

Why is the performance of showthread drastically slower than it was on 3.6.8?

Well, now I'm starting to get a little bit concerned. My shared host is running PHP 5.2.5 and MySQL 5.0.45-community but no APC or XCache (although Zend is running but I understand it does not do much of anything).

Will I notice a substantial decrease in performance by upgrading to vB 3.7.0 because I'm not using a PHP cache?

None of my sites have become any slower than when running 3.6.

Thanks Charlie Brown. I checked the thread you linked but did not see any mention of Zend in it - just APC and eAccelerator. Will there be an option in vB's config file to make use of Zend? I saw a list of the commented-out cache options in vB's 3.7 config file somewhere on here but don't recall seeing Zend as one of them.

I'm not sure if Zend is actually an op-code cache like APC/Eacclerator/xcache are.

Not sure on that but you might look at your info in the admin panel and see if you have eAccelerator. I was going to have mine changed to APC but they (the server host) said they couldn't support it on my platform as there was too much trouble with it. Best thing to do is get with your host and see if they installed eAccelerator as well or if they will.

Too much trouble with APC? I find that a little surpising considering the developers of APC are the same people who develop php.

I think it is too much trouble to install and or maintain on the server I am on is what the techs were refering too?

I'll get with my host and see what they say. Thanks. From what I've read on their tech support forum, APC is not supported because it conflicts with suPHP...not sure if that is true or if they're just being a "webhost" about things.
