How to make domain name point to my vbulletin forum page

Hi Friends,
Initially i had a website and i installed vbulletin under it by creating a folder "forum" under my domain i.e

http://www.xyz.com/forum

But now i am pretty impressed with Vbulletin capabilities and i would like my forum page to be my homepage i.e
http://www.xyz/com should show the http://www.xyz.com/forum page.

I tried it and all my forum links became inaccessible as they were still trying to point to:
http://www.xyz.com/forum and that resolve to http://www.xyz.com/forum/forum and returned back with 404 error.

So, can someone please tell me the correct way of pointing my domain name to my vbulletin forum homepage.

i think you should redirect in your hosting cpanel.
redirect http://www.xyz.com/forum to http://xyz.com
thats all.

But how would http://www.xyz.com resolve to http://www.xyz.com/forum?

I am afraid of doin a redirect as it might affect search engine indexes?? Please correct me if i am wrong.

I use an .htaccess redirect:

Redirect permanent /index.html http://www.xyz.com/forum

Redirect with .htaccess:
http://www.freewebmasterhelp.com/tutorials/htaccess/2
