Please find enclosed an error message showing on my browser when I visit the forum homepage on an older forum that I am running which I think is 3.6x.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the error message occurred since the VPS server software was upgraded.

Is it possible to upgrade this version of vBulletin to 3.8.7 or do I need to do something beforehand - and before anyone says I should have upgraded ages ago - I agree but it's like a visit to the dentist for a filling

You can upgrade to 3.8.7. The upgrade script will determine your version and upgrade you to the proper version.
