Is it possible to find and ban all IP addresses originating from China?

I don’t have anything against China. My web site has a mostly a local audience, but it has had a continual onslaught of folks with IP addresses from China that sign up to spam the site. Every time one registers, I ban the IP address scope of the ISP. This is turning into an endless task. Is there a known listing of IP address originating from China? How do others deal with this??

There is a Mod over at vBulletin.org ---- "Prevent Registration From Certain Time Zones."
      I found it useful.
I edited a template so that instead of the error message "you are not allowed", they get the message "Thank you for registering", although no registration actually happens.

Instructions for editing the template is on the Mod thread.

        Thanks for the replies above!

The problem continues. After my post above, i started banning whole blocks of ip addresses from the spammer's who were joining the forum. This stopped the problem for a while. My site is now being joined by vast numbers of people from Amsterdam, the UK, the Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Taiwan and so on. I had about 35 registrations in the last 24 hours. A few that have actually posted are putting up pornography and links to traps masquerading as anti-virus programs. I disabled logins over-night. This morning, within 3 minutes of re-enabling them, spammers from far distant places started to register.

Is there some way to restrict registration so that only IP addresses originating in the US and Canada can register?

I found a tool to lookup IP addresses by country.

          Go to http://dnsstuff.com/
Select the link for “all free tools”
Find the lookup for “Country IP Range Lookup”
In my case I used the country china
I received a long list of ip addresses used by China
Because I run a local web forum I added the first two octets for each ip range
          No more spammers from China

          Yessss!!!!

We have been having the same problem except China is a small part of it. We have a huge number of spammers from Eastern Europe in addition to the WoW Gold from China. I have installed the vbStopForumSpam mod and it has work wonder so far. Only 1 or 2 slip thru every couple of days which is easy to ban again and ban the ip (or ip block) as well.

Good lucks with killing the spammers.

Does vb accept IP addresses in that format? If so, it should !

                      Ban these countries

I would ban the following countries, where no normal customers ever come from, only spammers and scams:

Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, most of Africa, except perhaps Egypt, Tunisia and South Africa. Also ban China, India, at least temporarily until they stop spamming so much. There's not much spam coming from South or Central America. I would also ban... the United States as there's a lot of spam coming from that country as well, but some would not want to do that for one or another reason :-)

                          Question

Same question regarding IP range ban on vB here... ;-) I guess we would have to add the banned IP ranges to htaccess file.
