    what happens?

    i am restoring a backup to go over our current one that is all messed up. the backup is from about 3 months ago

    i have my attachments as files rather than in database.

    when i delete my database and reimport my backed up database will i have a problem as there is attachments there that were upped after that backup was taken. or will it work ok when i up future attachments etc?

    You should backup your attachments directory together with your database.

    To answer your question... you might have problems with conflicting file names in the attachments directory as users post new attachments that are assigned previously used attachment ids. You should be able to avoid this by increasing the autoincrement value of the attachment table after you restore the backup. You can do this with a program like phpmyadmin:
