One of my users has mentioned a problem with logging on from the domain name without the www. (e.g. myforum.com rather than www.myforum.com)
Any idea why this would be so?

Because www.domain.com and domain.com are two different domains in the eyes of cookies.
You might be able to setup a rewrite of some sort to redirect users from a non www to www.
