How long can threads be?

I have what I think is a performance issue with my message board when certain threads get 100s of replies. What is other's experiences when and if a thread gets over say 500 replies. I have had at times one thread that I have closed when it has received between 1500 and 2000 replies. It seems like everything runs slower when these threads become so large, and then the board speeds up after these threads are closed.

I have seen threads with thousands of replies. I have never heard of this causing performance problems.

Where threads are concerned, here are some options that can help performance:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Email Options -> Use Mailqueue System

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Server Settings and Optimization Options -> Update Thread / Attachment Views Immediately

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> General Settings -> Thread/Forum Read Marking Type
