Can users control depth of forum display?

I currently use the default setting for displaying forums and subforums. But new users are a bit overwhelmed by all the forums being listed.

I know how to collapse it, so that only the main forums appear with the list of subforums beneath them, but my experienced users complained when I switched to that display.

So, is there a way to make the collapsed version the default, but give users an easy way to over-ride it, and make all the forums and subforums display?

I know a user can collapse a forum by clicking on the little chevrons to the right of a forum name, and the display will remain that way for them.

I'm looking for the opposite -- everything is collapsed, but if a user expands the forum listing once, it remains expanded every time they visit the board.

    TIA
