Usergroup doesn't take full effect

I've just started working on subscriptions for my site. I currently have a trial membership setup and once a member purchases the subscription, they get switched to another usergroup and rank.

Although the rank changes (as shown by a custom picture) the usergroup doesn't take full effect. It increases the permissions on the site and allows users to go to more areas but the usergroup is set to show the username as red as well. This part isn't showing for some reason.

Does this asterisk have anything to do with it?!?

Not sure what you mean but in the case of multiple usergroups the Primary will be the default usergroup and your members can change which usergroup they wish to be associated with in their User CP.
