enabling avatars after X posts?

Is it possible to do this? Say, enable avatars for members but only after they've contributed X posts?

Certainly, you can do this via the promotion system.
Simply create a new usergroup as a copy of your registered usergroup, name it anything you want, and then enable avatars for that group.

Then, go to Admin CP > Usergroups > Promotions and setup a promotion based on post counts for the X posts you want; promote their primary usergroup from registered users to the newly created group, and you're good to go
