    Activation E-mail Problems

For the past few months I have been receiving complaints from new users that the links in the activation e-mails do not work. Also when the user updates their e-mail, and a new activation e-mail is sent. They are claiming that they are unable to activate their accounts and I am having to do so for them. The other day I upgraded to the latest release, 3.6.4, from 3.6.1 hoping that this was a known problem and had been corrected.

    It didn't seem to work.

I have now disabled e-mail verification and have searched several times on these forums but do not see anything regarding this problem.

When I follow the activation links they work for me (Mac OS X, Safari). I have no idea if this is a problem with Firefox, IE7 or what. It seems to only affect a small minority of users.

If you search this forum on this topic you will find a lot, it is an ongoing 'problem'. The reasons vary, and I suspect they are all outside the control of vB. I get a few sometimes, not many.

I have the same problem as a new VB owner. All AOL and some HOTMAIL accounts are not receiving emails. I have contacted my host and had them setup reverse DNS which seems to have done nothing at all. I currently have over 20 users that have not received emails. This is frustrating.

The activation works fine.. Did you sign up for a yahoo, msn, gmail or other account to test it ?

Its likely the users email is getting stopped by spam filter - or maybe your domain is in a Blacklist ...

I'm running 2 diff forums and haven't had any complaints like you have described. One forum has been running for 4 years the other for a few months

If your VB is set correctly and your server is not on a blacklist it shouldnt be a problem

Thanks, Silver_2000, but it is a problem, and just saying it isn't doesn't really help us at all. I have a brand new installation of vBulletin, and I'm getting the same complaint from my users: they aren't getting their registration messages.

They also don't seem to be blocked by SPAM filters, and my domain is brand new so it certainly shouldn't be blacklisted anywhere.

For now I will be turning off verification––at least during the crucial early time of trying to develop a community at my forum.

          ––Ciao

            Did you test it ?

PM me the link and Ill test it

My point was the system works pretty well in many cases and it may be either configuration error or user error - hence the testing question

it's a BIG problem, my site is 4yrs old and the amount of emails of members not receiving the activation email is tiring.

I have tested it, and it seemed to work for me, but three of my other testers (all of whom are accomplished webmasters) didn't receive their verification e-mails, and couldn't find them being blocked.

I trust all three of them to be competent, so I believe there is a real problem somewhere along the line, though I don't know exactly where.

I'd be happy to PM you the link... and I appreciate you testing it for me.

                Thanks

In MOST cases stuff either works or it doesnt ....
If its an intermittent problem is unlikely to be the software.
In my case it worked exactly as it was designed

In my opinion your issue may be related to the fact that your email inst coming from your domain but from your provider
asmallorgange is ALL over the from of the email - see if you can tweak the settings to make the email look like it came from your domain

It didnt get a big score from spam assassin (2.399) but it might get rejected by other scanners for the mismatch .

Take a look at the settings in admin cp for the -f feature under options

Tweak it to see what it does to the outgoing messages

Hotmail seems to put activation emails in the spam folder. Had a few users with that problem.

If hotmail and aol are not reciving emails theres a good chance your domain or host does not have proper reverse domain names setup.

I am not having a problem with users receiving their activation e-mails.

I AM having a problem with the links in the e-mails being sent working correctly.

I believe it is only affecting Firefox users for PC.

When they click the link to activate their accounts they are told that their is a problem with the way the site is redirecting and it will not work.
