    Thread/Forum Read Marking Type ?

Can someone explain to me what the difference is and what I should choose ?

    1. Inactivity/Cookie Based
    2. Database (no automatic forum marking)
    3. Database (automatic forum marking

    Thanks

    1. This is the old fashioned way, and simply checks for posts since your last visit.

    2. This actually stores if you read a thread for all threads from the last two weeks or so (settable).

    3. Same as 2, except that it also updates the forum automatically, at the cost of a bit more performance.

    I prefer the third option.

      Ok, regarding 3.

Is that the setting vbulletin.com/forum use ? If yes, I´m not sure how my users would think about that the threads dissapear from the New Posts list when they are read.

I often quick read the latest threads, and go back a few minutes later, with setting 1 this is not a problem, but with setting 3 the threads dissapears from the list.

I will ask my users what they would like.

Maybe even make a poll about it here, could be interesting to know what people use.

The logic in this statement is positively VULCAN.

Then again, to read the last 5 threads, I do not do this process which I find extremely slow and wasteful:

New Posts -> Read Thread #1 <- (click back)
New Posts -> Read Thread #2 <- (click back)
New Posts -> Read Thread #3 <- (click back)
New Posts -> Read Thread #4 <- (click back)
New Posts -> Read Thread #5 <- (click back)

I learned not to do this because of #1 Dial-up and #2 vBulletin 2.x which forgot what you have read if you step away from the computer to pee and hit Refresh.

            I do this:

            New Posts ->
            Ctrl-click on Thread #1
            Ctrl-click on Thread #2
            Ctrl-click on Thread #3
            Ctrl-click on Thread #4
            Ctrl-click on Thread #5
Use my Tabbed Browser to read the threads at my leisure.

              I am Vulcan !!! LOL

Seriously, my users are not computerminded at all (most aren´t) and to ask them to Ctrl-click and use tabbed browsers to use the forum would scare them away.

If someone asks "When I view New Posts and reply to a post and then come back to New Posts, that thread I replied to isn't there", your answer is simple "The thread isn't new anymore."

Anyway if they subscribed to that thread, it should be at the top of their subscriptions.

Well, strictly logical - New Posts are actually Active Threads Since Last Visit, since they only show the list of threads were new posts have been posted, not posts themselves, people still have to click each thread to see the new posts.

I quite agree to this. Is there a method so that we can use automatic database marking as well as show the threads in the list even why they have been read? (Just like in cookie setting). This will be best of both the worlds.
