  • Stopping Spam Posters????

My forum is now up to a whopping 215 members, four of whom were spammers.

Is there any way to stop these jerks?

I have the registration set up where you have to type in the letters in the picture, and confirm registration via email.

Today some new member posted in my product and service forum asking about where to get Xrummer software. I googled it and found this:

link removedDoes this stuff really work agains the Vbulletin registration methods? Is there anything I can do to stop them?

I think this new member is a jerk toying with me.

Anything I can do to defend my tiny forum against these idiots?

    Thanks,

    E

Everyone is being hit with a lot of spam these days. There is no way to stop it unless you want to stop all new registrations. Some things you can do are:

    1. Moderate new registrations:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> User Registration Options -> Moderate New Members -> Yes

    2. Activate email verification:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> User Registration Options -> Verify Email address in Registration

    3. Activate Image Verification if your server supports it:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> User Registration Options -> Image Verification -> Yes

    4. Ban 'free' email domains many spammers use:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> User Banning Options -> Banned Email Addresses

Also make sure you upgrade to 3.6.x if you haven't already since this includes an improved captcha for image verification.

Than ks Steve. I already use image verification and email confirmation.

How do I know the names of free email domains that many spammers use?

I have this same problem, I have about 4 spammers a day, they sell from lamps to viagra, it's starting to annoy me because i have img verification and email verification... one registered posted as a normal member (I'm amazed at peoples skills here, blah blah), then today he came back and edited each word and made it a link!

Also emwonk, don't buy that program it's a trick, a bot posted an advert saying 'Anyone got information about xrumer?', then someone googled it and found he was spamming that, as a trick so you google/post links back to his question, here... look.

There are mods that do a fine job.

I am using a mod that prevents new users from posting messages that contain images or links.

That is the same spam we had a few days ago. Hint: put "xrumer" in your censored word list. It won't stop the spam, but at least it will make the message less effective and useless to anyone who reads it.

Got a link? This might hold us over until the good folks at vB add something we call could use.

I posted in the "Suggestions" area here a few days ago, where I'd like to have the ability to use certain BBCode limited by usergroup. Or in essence, having the same options we have for Signatures, but for BBCode as used in forum posts. I would set it up via the promotions system so that new users would get the ability to post IMG and URL BBcode after five posts; we catch most spammers within minutes, since we have a large staff, and rarely have they gotten beyond two spam posts before we nail 'em.

Wouldn't normally be a problem if it were just links, but we have now had four spams within a week with an image starring Britney Spears doing unmentionable things "on camera". I'd rather spare members the free porno image when these spambots decide to litter our forum with this junk.

I am unsure about banning e-mail from the free e-mail services, but I am very tempted. Has anyone gotten a lot of e-mails in profiles with the domain web.de in them? Three of the last four Britney spams had web.de as the mail host. If they're a freebie, I'll toss 'em out.

Spammers. They've already ruined e-mail and Usenet, now they're polluting our forums. Can't even begin to guess how many hours I've wasted dealing with it.

              Yeah, I had to ban web.de, mail.ru, yandex.ru, ukr.net, gawab.com and all .BIZ domains.

                Good list--thanks!

That reminds me--I also banned all .info domains. I have yet to ever get a legit e-mail from a .info e-mail address.

thanks gang. I deleted the link in my thread above.

Smelling a rat, I deleted that post and that user entirely from my forum.

I hate freaking spammers. Just in the last three months, my personal account is getting flooded.

Homeland security should smart bomb these suckers....

I have also started a banned email list. I am unclear on the instructions in vbulletin. Where is says leave a space between banned email addresses, is this correct:

                  @web.de @ukr.net res6.info @freeideasearch.info @mail.ru @yandex.ru ukr.net @gawab.com .biz

?? Is that the correct entry in the banned email addresses? I also have aggressive email banning now checked...

Yes, leave a space. I wanted to ban all the .INFO domains, but a member search revealed that I have a couple of legit members with .INFO e-mail addresses.

Also, once you see a new user with a suspicious domain in his e-mail, check the domain (if you have spare time) and delete immediately. I'm referring to the domains like makefreemoney.com or allwebdrugs.com or porn sites, etc. You get the drift.

I think that a nice addition to vBulletin would be - a moderation of the new user's first post. If it's not a spam - approve him/her, if it's a spam - bye-bye.

Also head over to Vbulletin.org and get the "miserable users" plugin
Not effective on one time spammers but - try it once yourself on a test account

We changed registered users to a moderated group. They move automatically after x number of days OR if they post something real we move by hand immediately. That way the crap never publicly hits the forum. IF they are spammers they get moved into the banned group

How do these cats even find a small forum like mine?

I have only 200 members, and I don;t get how the spammers even make any money off of their scheme.

BY the way, I went through the entire member list and found a few members who were from web.de, and sure enough, one of them had converted an old OK post into a spam post.

Maybe we could start some kind of a sticky thread here listing all of the bad members/spammers.

Would the moderators be open to that?
