Anyone else being bombarded lately with Spammers? Suggestions?

I've had at least 10 times the spammers posting on my site over the past week then I have in the entire duration of my site until now. It's cell phones, porn, electronics and more crap.

I've got the standard registration process in place so I do get their email and they do have to get the notification and activation email which I thought would deter them, but they still come.

Anyone having this experience as well recently?

Any suggestions to remedy, or at least slow down the onslaught of spam?

Any ideas what to do with their email address?

        Great hack from vb.org:

Allows for certain keyword triggers to cause a post to be placed in the moderation queue. Not a solution to stopping it, but keeps them from being seen by your members.

          What I do is this...

When a spammer spams - I check his IP at whois.sc.

They will list blacklist status. If they show listings I ban the IP.

If they show clear, then I search the IPs on my forum and see if ay other users have that same IP. If its other members that have spammed - or have no posts - I ban the IP.

Its not much, but its a start.

SirAdrian also released a Hack to Prevent Spam - That might help you.

my "problem" is people or bots sending messages to me as "postmaster" from the "contact us" button area. It's always the same IP and I did ban it, but evidently banning an ip does not prohibit sending messages from the "contact us" form. By the way, it's always from the same IP with a Yahoo email address that bounces any reply, and does not really exist and the message always says "very interesting site" or something like that. Why would people bother sending a message like this in the first place? I'm using 3.62 BTW.

              I do this

              Ban email
              Ban IP
              Prune posts
              delete user

Its boring ... but I am hoping it works

(I think) These are one man desperados that are completeing registration and the image verification process..

There is a little chatter about cel phones on my forum - so that why I think we attract them..

              just an idea..

I changed the validation image to a question instead. This had prevented all bots from spamming.

Turn on Image verification for guests using the contact Us form.

AdminCP -> vBulletin Options -> Site Name / URL / Contact Details -> Allow Unregistered Users to use 'Contact Us': Yes, but Verify Image

This is ofcouse assuming you have either GD or ImageMagick setup correct for image verification.

Spammers have just started returning to my site and have clearly cracked the image verification again using an automated script.
