    Need to install testsite

Hi all, Can I install a vBulletin for a test too.
Now I have a vB installed on my site , so far everything is fine, But I need a test site for testing mods skins and other stuff before mess up the main board. Is it legal to install vB in 2 places.
Once again sorry if it is the wrong place to my post
    Thanks for advice

Yes, you can. From the License Agreement you agreed to...
If you have a valid licence, you may set up an additional test forum in order to test code, template and database modifications. To make this clear to us and our licence verification procedures, place it in a directory called 'testvb' and be sure to password protect it. It must not be accessible by the general public.

sorry , That was too much to read.
simply I have to make a folder called "testvb" and upload files to that folder . then install the software.
      am I right?

It needs to be password protected, or protected some other way that it is not publicly accessable.

Please excuse me if this is a silly question, but how do you password protect the forum? Do you mean on a directory level?

I want to be able to make changes and once it is all working how I would like it migrate directly to the live forums.

              Thanks in advance for help.

              Regards,

              John

So how do we password protect a dir on the server? And when we place the files in a 'testvb' dir and install it do I have to setup a MySQL database as well like I did for the actual board install? Many thx!

So far I installed a test site and just disabled the boards, so only the admins can see it.

                  Is that fine EULA wise?

No, as stated it needs to not be publicly accesable.

Could you please explain how to do this, because so far nobody has answered the specifics of it.

With the boards off, I also do not see how it is publically accessible as anyone that goes to that page gets a message stating the boards are off.

Also there is really no point to a test site unless I can test it via my broweser and see how it would behave.

All other programs I use I just install a local instance, but that is not really a simple option with vB due to the domain restriction.

If you could point to a guide somewhere that explains how to do this in a way that vB is happy it would more than likely be followed more than it is now.

                      /John

Here's a good tutorial to password protect a test forum:

Learn how to use Apache's .htaccess files to protect pages on your site with a username and password.

                          Thanks!

That is exactly what I needed. Can I please suggest that this is stickied somewhere or given as part of the FAQ. I've been trying to find this out for a while now, and I am sure I am not the only person.

                          Regards,

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but I wanted to add an option for anyone searching the boards and finding this thread.

If you have access to cpanel, it will simplify the process for you. There is an option to password protect directories.
